The London Nationals are proud to announce Donny Martin as the team’s new Head Coach.
For the London, Ontario native, the opportunity represents a return to familiar roots. Martin spent a brief portion of his playing career with the London Diamonds, the name under which the Nationals franchise competed at the time, before continuing his junior career in the Ontario Hockey League.
Martin went on to play with the London Knights, appearing in 182 OHL games over three seasons and recording 132 points. His performance eventually led to him being selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round, 103rd overall, of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft.
Following junior hockey, Martin embarked on a lengthy professional career that spanned approximately 14 years and took him through several leagues and organizations across North America.
His playing career included stops in the American Hockey League, International Hockey League, ECHL, Colonial Hockey League/UHL, Western Professional Hockey League and Central Hockey League. Martin was also a member of the 2001-02 Memphis RiverKings, who captured the Central Hockey League’s Ray Miron President’s Cup championship.
After an extensive career on the ice, Martin transitioned into coaching and hockey operations, spending six years in Head Coach and General Manager roles, including professional hockey stops in Utica and Richmond.
That combination of playing, coaching and management experience gives Martin a unique perspective as he takes over behind the Nationals bench. He understands the demands of junior hockey, the progression required to reach the professional level and the importance of creating an environment where players can continue developing while competing to win.
For Martin, joining the Nationals also brings his hockey journey in London full circle.
From playing briefly for the organization when it was known as the London Diamonds, to starring with the London Knights and building a lengthy professional playing and coaching career, Martin now returns to his hometown to lead the next generation of Nationals players.
The Nationals are excited to welcome his experience, leadership and knowledge of the game to the organization as the team continues through the 2026-27 season.
